Learning to Drive in Mansfield: The Ring Road, Retail Park Parking and Your Route to Ashfield

September 12, 2026

Mansfield sits around 14 miles north of Nottingham along the A60 — close enough for regular lessons, far enough that it has its own driving character rather than feeling like an extension of the city. The town centre still runs on the inner ring road built in the early 1970s (the A6009/A6191), with a tight one-way gyratory threaded inside it that’s locally known as the Mansfield Circuit. Lane discipline and early positioning matter here in a way a simple grid layout never really tests, so it’s usually one of the first things a Mansfield course spends real time on.

Portland Retail Park sits right off that ring road, which means low-speed retail-park manoeuvring and roundabout approaches come as part of a normal lesson route rather than a special trip out to practise them. Further from the centre, the A617 Mansfield and Ashfield Regeneration Route curves round the south and west of town as a mostly single-carriageway bypass with a string of roundabouts — often busy enough to be a lesson in its own right, reading gaps and holding a decision at speed rather than crawling through traffic.

The M1 is close by at Junctions 28 (A38, towards Alfreton) and 29 (A617, towards Chesterfield), which gives an easy, low-pressure way to build confidence on faster dual-carriageway roads before an actual motorway lesson — motorway lessons only became legal for learners with an approved instructor after a June 2018 rule change, so it’s genuinely a fairly recent option even for Nottinghamshire-based schools. Because Mansfield also sits on the southern edge of Sherwood Forest, routes out towards Rainworth and Clipstone swap the ring-road traffic for wooded, undulating country lanes — so a Mansfield learner can cover tight urban gyratory driving, retail-park parking, dual-carriageway bypass driving and rural lane work without ever needing to drive into Nottingham.
