Learning to Drive in Ripley: Derbyshire Hills, the A38 Bypass and Your Route to Derby (Alvaston)

September 12, 2026

Ripley sits in Derbyshire’s Amber Valley, roughly 13–16 miles north-west of Nottingham, on ground high enough to look out over the Amber and Derwent valleys. That means Ripley learners get real gradients that much of flatter Nottinghamshire simply doesn’t have — hill starts and gradient awareness are a genuine, regular part of a Ripley course rather than something squeezed in for one lesson.

The road layout reflects the town’s position on the edge of Nottingham’s wider built-up area. The A38 Ripley–Swanwick bypass carries through-traffic around the west side of town, meeting the A610 at the Hartshay Hill interchange. The A610 is the road most Ripley learners come to know best, since it runs east through Codnor, Langley Mill and Eastwood on the direct line towards the M1 and Nottingham — and the older main road it replaced still runs straight through the town centre, tellingly still named Nottingham Road. Closer to home, lessons mix genuinely rural lanes out towards Heage, Swanwick and Butterley with roundabout and retail-park traffic nearer the A610.

Ripley has been a market town since the 13th century — Henry III granted its market charter in 1251 — and still holds an open-air market in the Market Place on Fridays and Saturdays, which is worth knowing simply because it changes how the town centre feels and moves on those two days.

Booking your test from Ripley

That same A610 corridor makes Watnall the natural test centre choice for Ripley learners, reached without ever needing to cross Nottingham city centre — unlike Chilwell or Colwick on the far side of it. Read what to expect at Watnall once your test is booked, and see GOV.UK’s guide to booking your driving test if you haven’t done that yet.
