Not passing first time is common and not a reflection of whether you’ll be a safe, capable driver — but it’s natural to want to know what happens next and how quickly you can try again at Colwick, Chilwell or Watnall.
The 10-working-day rule
After a failed practical test, DVSA requires at least 10 working days before you can sit your next one — working days meaning Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. Importantly, you don’t have to wait those 10 days to book your next test, only to actually sit it, so many learners rebook straight away for the earliest available slot beyond that window.
How to rebook
You can rebook directly at gov.uk/book-driving-test using your provisional licence number and theory test pass certificate details, choosing whichever of the Nottingham test centres has the earliest suitable slot — Colwick, Chilwell or Watnall — or another centre nearby if you’re happy to travel. Booking directly through gov.uk avoids the extra fees some third-party “priority booking” sites charge for the same official test.
Making the most of the gap before your retest
- Ask your instructor for honest, specific feedback on what came up on your test sheet, not just a general “you’ll be fine next time.”
- Book a handful of focused lessons targeting exactly those points, rather than generic extra practice.
- If nerves were a factor as much as skill, say so — pacing and confidence-building lessons in the run-up to a retest can matter as much as manoeuvre practice.
A retest is simply the next attempt, not a sign you’re behind — plenty of very safe, capable drivers didn’t pass on their first go. The learners who come back quickest tend to be the ones who used the waiting days for a few well-targeted lessons rather than just waiting and hoping.
