Wet roads dramatically increase stopping distances, so a few adjustments make a big difference.
Slow down — even a light drizzle can make roads slicker than they look. Increase your following distance to account for longer braking.
Turn on your headlights, even during the day, so other drivers can see you clearly.
Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, which can cause skidding. If you do skid, ease off the accelerator and steer gently in the direction you want to go — don’t slam the brakes.
Watch for standing water, which can cause hydroplaning at higher speeds. When in doubt, slow down before you reach it, not while you’re in it.
