Motorway Lessons

Since a June 2018 rule change, learner drivers can take motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a dual-controlled car — it's optional, not part of the practical test itself, and something your instructor can add once they feel you're ready. Being close to the M1 and A52 makes this easy to arrange — see our Driving Tips section for more on how motorway lessons work. Get in touch to ask your instructor about adding one.

Motorway lessons for learners

Since 4 June 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales have been able to take motorway lessons, as long as they are with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls. The lessons are voluntary, but motorways are not part of the driving test, so this is the best chance to try them with an expert beside you.

What we cover

  • Joining from a slip road and matching your speed to the traffic
  • Lane discipline, overtaking and keeping a safe distance
  • Variable speed limits and overhead signs
  • Leaving the motorway safely
  • What to do if you break down

The M1 runs just west of Nottingham, so motorway practice is never far away. Newly qualified drivers can book these lessons too.
